The West Algarve is famous for its iconic cliffs and rocky beaches in the west, but the east is a hidden gem. Here, you’ll find kilometers of sandy beaches, peaceful lagoons, charming islands, and authentic fishing villages.
From Faro to Vila Real de Santo António, this region is full of nature, culture, and true Portuguese life. The perfect destination to fully embrace the spirit of Portugal.
Natural Park Ria Formosa
One of the greatest treasures of the East Algarve is Ria Formosa, a unique natural park stretching around 60 km along the coast. A maze of sand islands, lagoons, channels, salt pans, and sandbanks, constantly reshaped by the tides. Flamingos, storks, spoonbills, and countless migratory birds call this paradise home. A true haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
A walk through Ria Formosa is never the same. Tides, seasons, and the changing light create a landscape that feels new every time, making each stroll a fresh experience.

Beaches and islands
Along the Ria Formosa coast, you’ll discover stunning islands: Ilha de Faro, Ilha Deserta, Ilha do Farol, Ilha da Culatra, Ilha da Armona, Ilha da Fuseta, Ilha da Tavira, Ilha da Cabanas, and Ilha da Cacela. Each island has its own charm, with long, white sandy beaches and restaurants serving freshly caught fish. Some islands are reached by ferry, others by footbridges.
For lovers of long sandy stretches, the East Algarve is unbeatable. Starting from Praia da Manta Rota, a continuous strip of wide beaches runs through Praia da Lota, Praia Verde, and Monte Gordo, all the way to Vila Real de Santo António at the Spanish border. Perfect for long walks along the shore and relaxed beach days. Praia Verde is a highlight, where pine forests gently meet golden sands.

Charming fishing villages & historic towns
The East Algarve is full of authentic Portuguese fishing villages like Fuseta, Olhão, and Santa Luzia. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy freshly caught seafood at the harbourside restaurants or local markets.
Tavira is one of the Algarve’s most beautiful towns, with Moorish and Roman influences. Faro, the largest city in the region, has a rich history and is perfect for a leisurely exploration on foot. Vila Real de Santo António, a lively border town, offers a relaxed vibe along the Rio Guadiana.

Vila Real de Santa António
The traditional inland
The East Algarve’s inland is hilly and green, with cork oak forests, olive and fruit groves, maquis, and small rivers. Here, you can experience traditional Portuguese life with old farms, sleepy villages, and quiet country roads. Perfect for walking, cycling, or exploring by car.

Another natural gem is the do Sapal Nature Reserve near Castro Marim. Narrow streams, saltbanks, and marshes provide breeding grounds for many birds, just like in Ria Formosa. In the drier areas, you’ll find fig, almond, and carob trees. From Castro Marim Castle, you get a stunning view over the wetlands and the Guadiana River.
Easy access
The East Algarve is surprisingly easy to reach. Faro Airport is only 2–3 hours from most Western European countries. From the airport, it’s just a 30-minute drive to Celebra a Vida Resort in Fuseta. There’s also a coastal train running from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António, the last town before the Spanish border. Ideal if you want to explore the region using public transport.
